In this tutorial you will have a guide on how to file an unemployment application.
This will make completing the application a breeze. Whether you have been laid off, quit your job, were fired, on a leave of absence or had your hours reduced you can file for unemployment benefits.
Unemployment benefits are there to provide you with temporary financial benefits if you lost your job through no fault of your own and meet the eligibility requirements. We encourage you to file your claim right away because unemployment benefits run Sunday to Saturday.
Filing an Initial Claim
For filing an initial claim the general rule of thumb is if you work your full regular hours for the week wait until Monday to file. If you worked less than your normal week file immediately.
If you’re unsure if your situation qualifies for benefits you should file and allow them (Kansas Department of Labor) to make the determination.
Information You´ll Need
Let’s begin with the information that you’ll need before starting the application.
You’ll need to have your social security number and your driver’s license or other government-issued ID, If you’re not a US citizen you’ll also need to provide your alien registration number on the back of the card.
The KDOL also need the last 18 months of employment with all employers. You will need to provide each employers name, their contact information, dates worked, gross earnings and the reason for separation. Most of this information can be found on your w-2s or pay stubs.
If you worked outside the state of Kansas, we’re in the US military or were a civilian employee with the federal government you will need to contact the call center to file your application.
If you are in the US military you will need to provide your dd-214 member 4 form. If you were a civilian employee with the federal government, you will need to provide your sf-8 or sf-50 as appropriate.
Once you have been cleared for benefits and your first payment releases you will receive your payments through a prepaid debit card. After you receive your debit card you will receive information on how to set up a funds transfer if you so choose.
How Unemployment Assistance Works
Here’s how unemployment assistance works:
The weekly benefit amount ranges from 118 to 474 dollars per week and the duration of benefits varies depending upon the unemployment rate.
Once your claim is processed you will be issued a monetary determination by mail. This will let you know the benefits you are potentially eligible to receive.
It is very important that you open and thoroughly read every piece of mail you receive from KDOL in order to avoid any disruption in benefits.

Here are the additional requirements:
- Being able and available for work
- Actively seeking work
- All issues determined eligible such as your job separation.
You will also be responsible for filing weekly claims and keeping a detailed record of your job seeking activities.
