How to File a Weekly Certification for Unemployment Benefits in North Carolina

Posted on by

After you apply for unemployment benefits with the North Carolina Division of Employment Security and you’ve registered for work at NCWorks.gov, remember to file your weekly certifications.

The weekly certification is where you’ll answer eligibility questions about the previous week. This is very important, as you must complete a weekly certification for each week to receive payment.

Starting on Sunday, you can file your weekly certification for the previous week. Make sure to file your certifications every week, even if you are still waiting to find out if you’re eligible for benefits. It’s easy to do online or with the NCBES mobile app.

Let’s get started

Sign in to your online account at des.nc.gov and click on File Weekly Certification in the Action Required box. On the NCBES mobile app, select the Weekly Certification option.

Note that you will go through several screens to complete your weekly certification. Look for the bar across the top of the screen to see where you are in the process.

Before you start, read the list of reminders, then click Next.

First, you’ll see the weeks for which you can file a weekly certification. Select the week you are filing for and let us know if you entered a job or job assignment that week. Click Next to continue.

Next, you’ll answer questions about your work search activities for that week, any money you earned, and being able and available for work. Read each question carefully and answer truthfully. Giving incorrect information could lead to an overpayment or an investigation of fraud. When you’re finished, click Next to see a summary of your responses.

Review your answers. If everything is accurate, click Next to continue.

Finally, you’ll be asked to certify that the answers you’ve provided are true. Then, click Submit.

That’s it! Your confirmation page includes a confirmation number and shows you any issues that might delay your benefit payment. If you have more weeks to file, you can do so now. If not, just remember to come back and fill out your weekly certification every 7 days until you return to work.
