How can you prove I’m who I say I am?

When you first apply for unemployment insurance benefits or when you want to have personal account information changed, including your address or banking details, your identification will be confirmed. If you are claiming benefits on a weekly basis, it may also be verified yearly.

Many people filing for unemployment must use the security provider ID.me to confirm their identity in order to lower the danger of fraud. In order to help the department efficiently authenticate claimants’ identities, NJDOL has a contract with ID.me to offer multi-factor identification verification services.

I used ID.me to confirm my identity, but I’m still not getting any rewards. What ought I to do?

If requested to use ID.me for verification, you should only do so. Unless you use the unique NJ link that the NJ Department of Labor gives you to confirm your identification, ID.me won’t be aware that you are a NJ Unemployment application.

Did you use the standard ID.me website to confirm your identification rather than the NJ link that was provided to you?

Despite using a different email address than the one connected to your first unemployment claim, did you authenticate your identification on the NJ page?

Your first unemployment claim’s email address must be updated in your ID.me profile. The ID.me instructions were sent to this email address. Please refer to this FAQ if you want to modify your main email address. Please give processing 7 business days after updating.

Did you not get a confirmation that you used ID.me to validate your identity?

Those who successfully verify will get a “You’re Verified!” email from ID.me. If you did not finish the ID.me procedure, you probably did not get this email. Please use the NJ-specific link NJDOL sent you to log in and try again.

What if I choose to not participate in identity proofing, or fail to prove my identity when I first apply?

If you choose not to participate in the identity verification process, or you fail the verification process, you can still submit your application. However, we will not make any benefit payments to you until we confirm that your identity has been verified.

I struggle with technology. Are there other ways I can verify my identity?

If you’re not comfortable using our self-service option to upload your documents, there are two other ways you can your identity. You’ll be able to choose the method you prefer at the start of the verification process:

  • Video-chat verification. Virtually meet with an ID.me employee to walk you through the verification process. You’ll need at least two identity documents for the 5-10 minute video chat.
  • In-person verification. Schedule an appointment at your nearest UPS store to verify in person. You’ll need to bring at least two identity documents with you.
