Federal agency to send more checks and debit cards in the mail weekly.
The IRS sent out a “large number” of $1,400 checks in the mail last week, which will begin arriving by the end of the week or next week.
The agency acknowledges that there are people who thought they would receive the money in their bank accounts, but some with the bank forced the payment to be processed physically.
“It is possible that their payment was mailed because the bank rejected the deposit. This could happen because the bank information is invalid or because the bank account has been closed,” the agency warned.
It adds that you cannot change the banking information the IRS already has on record and strongly urges Americans to avoid calling.
“Do not call the IRS, our telephone assistants will not be able to change your banking information either,” it stated.
The IRS will continue with the weekly mailing, but there is no official schedule. There is a universe of 12 million people, for example, who make less than $12,000 a year, so they don’t report taxes, so the agency would USPS their money to them.
If the check could not be delivered to the home, recipients should let the IRS know so it can reissue the aid.
The IRS said that more payments are about to be issued and most people will not have to take any action unless they have cancelled their bank accounts and/or moved to a new home.
“Additional batches of payments will be sent out in the coming weeks as direct deposits and by mail as paper checks or debit cards,” the agency said.
Most people who filed 2019 or 2020 returns will see their deposit soon, but there are groups that could have problems, including Social Security beneficiaries and veterans.
