Who is elegible for Stimulus Check?

The legislation provides a one-time payment of $1,200 to single adults with an adjusted gross income of $75,000 or less on their 2019 tax returns.

Married couples who filed jointly will receive $2,400, with an extra $500 per child under 17 years old.

Note: False information has been circulating on the Internet and social media since November 2023 about a possible fourth stimulus check for seniors. It is important to clarify that these rumors are false, and there are no plans for a new stimulus check at present. This article focuses on the initial round of stimulus checks introduced by the CARES Act on March 27, 2020. In addition, a second round of stimulus checks was incorporated into the relief legislation signed on December 27, 2020. Moreover, a third round of $1,400 stimulus checks was approved by the President on March 11, 2021.

Eligibility for Social Security Recipients

At theunemployment we ensured that people receiving Social Security retirement, disability or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits were eligible for stimulus payments. In addition, low-income Social Security recipients would receive the full $1,200 check, rather than the $600 initially proposed.

The amount of the stimulus check decreases with income. For individuals earning more than $75,000 (based on their 2019 or 2018 tax returns), the payment is reduced by $5 for every $100 earned above the threshold. Similar reductions apply to couples and heads of household.

Automatic Distribution to Social Security Beneficiaries

The IRS will automatically distribute $1,200 stimulus payments to Social Security recipients and railroad retirees who didn’t file tax returns for 2018 or 2019. No additional paperwork is necessary, and the IRS will utilize benefit statements (Form SSA-1099 and Form RRB-1099) for this purpose.

Automatic Payments for SSDI Disability Beneficiaries

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) recipients will also receive stimulus payments automatically if they didn’t file tax returns for 2018 or 2019. Similar to Social Security beneficiaries, SSDI beneficiaries will receive payments based on their benefit statements.

Automatic Payments for SSI and VA Beneficiaries

SSI recipients without dependent children will receive automatic stimulus payments, as will beneficiaries of Compensation and Pensions (C&P) benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Additional Information

People eligible for stimulus payments but who didn’t file tax returns in 2018 or 2019 can use the IRS online tool for non-filers to register. The deadline for entering bank account information for direct deposit was May 13.

For incarcerated individuals, there have been changes in the IRS stance regarding stimulus checks. A federal judge ruled that incarcerated individuals are eligible for stimulus checks under certain conditions.

If stimulus payments are received for deceased relatives, the IRS requires them to be returned. Instructions for returning payments can be found on the IRS website.
