This Saturday is the deadline for you to receive the corresponding payment this year. Low-income recipients who have not yet claimed their stimulus check have less than 24 hours to submit the application to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) through the online “Non-filers” tool.
The IRS reminded those eligible for payment under CARES on Thursday to complete the procedure by 3 p.m. ET this Saturday, Nov. 21. These Americans would also be eligible for the additional $500 credit for dependents under age 17, up to a maximum of three, under a statute passed by the U.S. Congress last March.
The extended deadline of November 21 also gives more time to federal benefit recipients who already received a payment but did not sign up for $500 payments for qualified children.
This group includes people who receive Social Security retirement funds, survivor or disability benefits, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Railroad Retirement benefits, and Veterans Affairs Compensation and Pension (C&P) benefits.
Any other low-income individual who is not required to file a tax return in 2018 or 2019 may enroll by applying for an economic impact payment.
The Non-Filers tool is designed for individuals with incomes typically below $24,400 for married couples, and $12,200 for singles who cannot be claimed as dependents by another person. This includes couples and individuals who are homeless, unemployed, and college students who are not claimed as dependents by their parents.
Users who claim aid before the deadline can request that payment be deposited into their bank account to expedite the process of sending and receiving the money.
Two weeks after completing the payment request, individuals can track the status of their payment using the “Get My Payment” tool, also available only on IRS.gov.
The “Non-filers” service, available since April, was enabled by the IRS to try to reach those who are not required to file their tax information because their adjusted gross income (AGI) is too low.
Through the application, the applicant enters his/her personal information and that of the dependents. As part of the process, the individual must create an account on the website with their email address and phone number, as well as a user ID and password.
Who should not use the Non-Filers tool?
Those who are required to file a 2018 or 2019 tax return should not use the tool. This group is responsible for filing their tax returns. If you used Non-Filers even though you were not supposed to, you should still file an electronic tax return to receive your check. Those who can be claimed as dependents on someone else’s tax return should also not use Non-Filers.
The extension of the deadline is one of the IRS’ additional initiatives to try to locate at least 9 million citizens who are creditors of the money plus have not received it because the agency does not have the data to process the payment.
In September, the office sent the same number of letters to recipients who might be eligible to receive the check.
In New York State alone, more than half a million letters were sent, urging people to access the IRS website to claim payment.
In addition, on November 10, the agency launched the “National Economic Impact Payment Registration Day” in a multi-sectoral effort to locate potential beneficiaries.
The campaign included the collaboration of the organization’s partners as well as non-profit organizations that work directly with low-income and marginalized communities.
At this time, the IRS has not detailed how many more people registered in the system after these additional efforts.
The latest data available at this time indicate that some 8 million Americans have used Non-filers since their release in the spring.
