A bill could be voted on this Sunday. Will Congress vote on a new $900 billion economic stimulus package on Sunday? That would be the best scenario in Washington after the bill to deliver a second pandemic stimulus check was taken up in negotiations by lawmakers.
On Friday night the House and Senate passed a short-term funding bill that prevents the government from closing until Sunday night. That could give lawmakers enough time to complete a new economic stimulus package that would also be tied to funding the government and could contain a second stimulus check of up to $600.
The bill could be voted on Sunday, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said Friday, saying the bill needed at least an extra 18 hours of work.
“I’m still hopeful we can get this done if the House moves quickly and we have to pick it up and do it tomorrow night,” Sen. John Thune said, according to a report by Heather Caygle, a reporter for Politico. “But I would say it is also very possible that it could go as far as Monday,” Caygle wrote.
Some legislators’ hopes of passing a second $1,200 stimulus check were dashed Friday when two senators tried to vote on the independent bill and were rejected, The Hill reported.
In the face of that rejection, the proposal to grant a second $600 stimulus check remains at the center of discussion, with the size of the check, if approved, reducing the stimulus for millions of families in America.
The proposed $900 billion stimulus check would also include $300 in weekly unemployment benefits for 10 to 16 weeks.
These would be three hypothetical scenarios in which a new coronavirus economic stimulus bill could be passed:
