Unemployment insurance in California is a program that provides temporary assistance to those who have involuntarily lost their job and are actively looking for work. This benefit is administered by the Employment Development Department (EDD). Individuals can receive up to 26 weeks of benefits, ranging from $50 to $450 per week, depending on their previous earnings.

To qualify, an applicant must demonstrate that they are unemployed through no fault of their own, must be actively looking for a job, and must be physically and mentally able to work. Applicants must claim their benefits every two weeks and can do so through the EDD’s website or by calling their customer service.
